To my friend Al,
How you heard of my plight I dont know. I felt like I was screaming at the top of my lungs and all the people who were supposed to be listening, who were being paid to listen; the police, the sheriffs dept, the D.A., the police in Cal, my elected representatives, all of them were deaf. The FBI, ATF, and the CBI, they did nothing. All the while I suffered and my son suffered.
I suffered loneliness, fear and indifference. As we found out, Keenan suffered the hardships of life in a homeless shelter. My sense of abandonment must have been small compared to his.
Then came a light, a glimmer of hope, a phone call from a total stranger, a stranger who asked nothing and offered hope. A stranger who was willing to devote his time, energy, knowledge and talent to help me and my son. A stranger who asked nothing in return.
Al, as those dark months, the worst of my life, dragged on, I dont know how I could have survived without the hope you gave me. I cant count the hours I wasted begging on the phone for someone to do something only to be lied to and shined on again and again. There were no officials who had the least intention of doing their jobs. No one gave a damn about my sons plight except you.
Keenan and I are back together and our life is a life again, our home is a home again and we are a family again. I have no idea where we might be if you hadnt reached out to us. In our home your name will always be remembered. When we speak of how the world could be or should be, we speak of you. I can only hope that the world will give back to you as you have given.
Forever grateful,
Hilary and Kevin Bender
